MICHELLE DESVEAUX - CURRICULUM VITAE

EDUCATION

2023 - Doctor of Philosophy, History, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK

Dissertation: “Intersections of Historical Consciousness: The Meeting of Indigenous and Settler Histories in Canada's Storied Places”

Comprehensive Fields: Comparative Indigenous History (major); Canadian History (minor); Comparative Intellectual and Cultural History of the Canadian and American Wests (minor).

Supervisor: Dr. Keith Carlson

Description: This research investigates the influence of and on historical consciousness in places where Canadian and Indigenous histories meet, meld, and challenge each other. Using a combination of fieldwork and archival research, three case studies address this point of inquiry: the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site; the National Archives of Canada; and Asinabka/Victoria Island.

2013 - Master of Arts, History, Trent University, Peterborough, ON

Thesis: “Not Simply Academic: The Marginalization of Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Histories through the Purpose and Definition of History in Early 20th Century Canada”

Supervisor: Dr. John Milloy

Description: This thesis explores the correlation between the development of historical methodology and professionalization with the delegitimization and exclusion of non-academic histories, specifically the oral histories and traditions of Indigenous peoples.

2004 - Bachelor of Arts, History, Cape Breton University, Sydney, NS

Directed Study: “Native American Views of History and the Value of Oral Traditions”

Supervisor: Dr. Graham Reynolds
